The Perfect Sign

Saturday Stories

Ok,First the answer to Thursday Gks-Sound mini quiz(Why do we hear ‘sound of the ocean’ in a seashell ? ) Answer- (Local noises around you that are altered by the shell)

Your responses—-Ques01

What happens is generally we hear different sounds around us and acquainted with it.The sea-shell suppresses certain sound(certain frequencies) around us and passes some sounds of other frequencies. The new mixture of sounds is what you haven’t heard before and hence the brain registers this sound as something different and we label it as ‘Sound of Ocean’.

Winners ,Congratulations 😀

I have decided to alternate Saturday stories and the Gks,one Saturday, story… the next Saturday Gks,anyone having a good title for Saturday GKs,please please tell me. Next Gk, next Saturday.

The Perfect Sign

In a small town, a rich couple recently had a son. One day the couple was sitting on the porch and chatting merrily. Amidst talks, the wife said,”Have you noticed, our son has a big birthmark on his forehead ? My mother says, this is the sign of greatness. He will be a minister in King’s court. “

“Nonsense ! Our family astrologer said, such birthmark defines the child will be a famous Doctor.” said the husband.

While both of them were arguing, a beggar came into the premises and asked for alms. The couple looked up and became silent. The beggar had the same mark on his forehead.

The Fake Astrologer

Saturday Stories

Once upon a time, there was a very famous and wise Astrologer in a kingdom. Many people believed him to be a man who directly spoke to Gods.

Even the King and his subjects respected him and consulted him. On several occasions during a case hearing in royal court, the King secretly asked the astrologer, which of the two parties were guilty. And whoever the astrologer named, the King used to punish them.

Slowly, the astrologer grew greedy and started suggesting the case in favor of those who bribed him. The King came to know this and called him one day and said,” One of our ministers is accusing an important person in court of taking bribery, can you tell me if the minister is speaking the truth ? “

The cunning astrologer replied,” Yes sir, Once I offer special prayer to the Gods, they will tell me the truth” The king said,” Alright,if the minister is lying,I will give harsh punishment”. That night the minister met the astrologer in private and begged,” Oh wise one ! If you say the king that I am lying, he will wipe me out !” And with this he gave him a bag full of gold coins.

Next morning the astrologer met and told the king, ” Dear Sire, the minister is saying the truth. “

“Arrest this man !” roared the King. The astrologer was dumbstruck but managed to mumble,”What is my crime ?” The kind retorted,” The person whom the minister was accusing of bribery is YOU !”

The Curse That Became Boon

Once upon a time,in a small village there was a man called Rama who sold mangoes from his orchard for a living. Everyday,he would carry a basketful of mangoes to the nearby town and sell them. To reach the town,he had to cross a jungle. It was rumored that the forest harbored wild animals, bandits and even spirits. That’s why Rama was always cautious while crossing it and made his returns before dusk.

One afternoon,Rama was returning in a happy mood having sold all his mangoes. Suddenly, while in forest he felt his basket felt heavy. He lowered the basket from his head and saw it was empty as it should be. He lifted it up again and started walking. He felt the same weight again; now he was scared. Then he heard a gentle voice,” Are you scared? Don’t be. Just put the basket down near that big tree ahead. ” Rama was a bit relieved to hear the sweet voice and did what he was told. Before his eyes, a shape of woman started forming and finally he was able to see a very beautiful deity like appearance. The woman spoke,” I am the spirit of this tree.Everyday,I take a walk around the forest. Today,I was a very tired, hence sat in the basket for sometime. Thank you for carrying me. I wish to give you something in return. Ask me anything. “

Being a simpleton, Rama said,” All the fruit vendors in market sell the same kind of mangoes like mine. Please give me some nice mangoes so that all of them will be sold tomorrow and I will return without a heavy basket.” The Goddess sighed,” Fool, you could have asked wealth …. Anyways, I am filling your basket with the juiciest and sweetest mangoes in the world” and she vanished.

When he reached his home and told everything to his wife, she was cross with him for not asking wealth. Later on, when she tasted one mango, she found them heavenly. She advised that Rama should sell each mango 10 times the usual price. Next day in market, when Rama said the price to his customers, they started mocking and went to other sellers. Later on, a rich man asked for a piece to taste and upon sampling it,immediately bought a dozen mangoes. Seeing this, other customers too tried it and with in few minutes his basket got empty. That night, the couple was very happy but the next day when he tried to sell his usual mangoes, customer said,” These mangoes are available every where. Why don’t you bring the yesterday’s variety again?” And he returned with a full basket and heavy heart to the tree where the spirit resided.

‘ O Spirit of tree, where are you ‘ he asked.

The Goddess made herself visible and inquired the reason of calling. Rama sobbed about his problem. The goddess said,” You wasted a boon on petty things. Anyways, I will grant you another boon. Choose wisely” “My wife wanted gold and jewels, please give me that” Rama answered.

“Alright, All your mangoes will turn into gold and jewels but it’s last boon so use it properly”

Rama gaily walked towards the village. After some, distance, suddenly a bandit jumped from shadows and asked,”What have you got there ? ”  Rama replied in fear,” Jewels !” “Are you joking with me! open it”. Upon finding the jewels, the bandit threatened Rama,” Leave the basket and don’t return or else you will die. Do you know who I am ? I am Veer Singh, the fiercest of all !” Rama knew the notorious name from the wanted posters and the rewards announced to catch the bandit,so he knew he was lucky to be alive till this moment.Rama bolted from there and ran back to the Goddess again and called her,” O Goddess, whatever boons you are giving me,they are useless ! If you don’t give me a good boon this time, I will tell everyone you are not a true Goddess” The Goddess became angry and said,” Imbecile! because of your stupidity you lost everything. You say my boons are worthless. Then,I am giving you a curse, whichever face you first see before sunset, will die ,now go and never come here! “

Rama started wandering in the forest so that he will reach his home after sunset or else his wife’s life would be in line. Suddenly,he heard a voice from the back,” Hey,where did you get those jewels from? Tell me or I will kill you. ” He turned and saw Veer Singh. That very moment Veer Singh gave  a sharp cry and fell down. Rama heaved a sigh of relief and carried him to King’s palace and collected the huge reward.Though, the boons didn’t help Rama much but the curse did change his life in the end.

The Mental Patient

Saturday Stories
One day Keshav paid a visit to a relative in city’s Asylum. When he arrived there,he came to know that he had to wait for an hour for some reasons. So,he sat in a bench while he waited. There was another guy sitting next to him. Gradually a conversation started.
Amidst talks, the man explained,” I have been staying here since few months. The Doctors say that I am mentally unwell.” Keshav thought that till now their talks have been normal, the man is behaving politely and speaking as any sane person. He asked,” You seem to behave quite properly then why are you being treated? “
“I am not sure if I really need treatment.Sometimes I wonder if the Doctors are a bit mentally unbalanced to recommend it.Anyways, what do you prefer: Leather Sandals or shoes ?”asked the man.
Keshav replied that he liked Leather Sandals as they were more comfortable. The man asked next,” I like them fried rather than steamed.what about you ?” For a moment Keshav felt his head reeling. Then he made a quick exit.

A Ghost’s Foolish Desire

Saturday Stories

Scary !!!! Not at all :P,if you want to have a laugh, read on….

On the outskirts of a town, there was a small temple. On the road from village to the temple, there was a big tree on roadside where a young ghost used to live. Every day he used to think.’ So many devotes visit the temple in morning and evening to offer their prayers. If the God actually helped them why would they continue to visit the temple?’

Cha_015The ghost observed a businessman, a teacher and a poor lady visited the temple everyday. One evening, seeing the businessman lone, he came down from tree and asked him, “Dear Sir, Why do you keep going to the temple each day? If you tell me, I can help you better than God”. The businessman at first got scared but slowly he gathered courage and said,”How can you help me? I am a rich man and I am having no problems in life. But I am not getting any sleep at night. Neither medicines nor my prayers seem to work. Still I visit to temple for some peace.” The ghost replied,” May be you are afraid of robbers. I will do something to cure you. But, will you promise to build a temple in my honor? “

Cha_016“Temple for a ghost! Its unheard of. But you are fine on a tree” said the businessman. The ghost got angry and said “I want to live in a temple and receive prayers, it’s my wish! I will give you sleep, you build a temple for me, agreed?” The man nodded and went away.

After sometime, seeing the teacher, he inquired the same. The teacher replied in a timid voice, “I have a daughter of marrying age but I have no wealth to arrange a wedding “The ghost uttered, “I will provide solution by tonight. But promise me when the merchant builds a temple, you will establish my statue there.” The teacher nodded and went on his way.

Next came the poor woman. After the questioning by ghost, the woman started crying and said, “My husband wastes everything on alcohol. We have nothing to eat.”The ghost replied, “I will arrange such that your husband stops taking liquor. But, after the businessman builds my temple and teacher puts my statue there, will you offer me your flowers and prayers?” The woman gladly agreed.

Cha_019Next day, seeing the businessman again, the ghost eagerly came down and asked, “Now all your problems are solved and you will get good sleep” The man roared”You wicked soul, To give me sleep you converted my wealth to ashes! By evening, if you don’t convert it back, I will conjure the exorcist ” “Ok,Ok,I will take back my magic” uttered the ghost in low tone.

After that, the moment the ghost came out as the teacher approached the tree; the teacher shouted, “Buffoon, You changed my daughter to a boy as a solution! Change it back or I will have the exorcist teach you a good lesson” The ghost replied,” Have mercy sir, I will change your daughter back to a girl”

Next, the poor lady came near the tree fuming and yelled,”Where are you Fraud! To refrain my husband from alcohol, you induced him to coma! Did I ask you for this? Just wait, I am calling the sorcerer.”The ghost started begging, ”Madam, please don’t do it. I will make your husband well” and then returned to tree and sat in gloom.

An elder ghost came near him and said, “I have been watching your foolish works. People go to temple because they have faith in God. Their wishes may not come true yet their devotion will remain. Who will worship a ghost! Start praying to God yourself and you might get nirvana.” The younger ghost silently nodded.

Geographic Reasons

Saturday Stories
Once upon a time,in a small village named Sitapur there lived a milkman. Almost every household bought milk from him.Furthermore, the milkman also supplied milk to the nearby village Rampur.

One day, Somu from Sitapur went to Rampur on certain business. There he came to know that the milkman is charging lesser amount for the milk he is supplying to natives of Rampur. Somu grabbed the milkman and shouted,” You traitor, how dare you charge more from your own village people ?”

The milkman replied in a sheepish tone,” Don’t get so angry Brother. Our village has scarcity of water. But there is a lucid pond on the way to Rampur.Due to this geographical reason,it is possible to charge milk on lesser price .”

The Art of Swimming

cooltext1801468861

Making friends and exchanging ideas have been a great boon for me ! Only today,a WP friend suggested me to retell some Indian stories from the old era.And I thought why not keep a day for stories,to start Saturday in a different mood than usual ! So,I have come up with the idea to try and post a short story based on different moods/themes each Saturday(I will try maintain the regularity 😉 )

Story of the Day- The Art of Swimming

Once upon a time, there was an old apothecary in a small village. He was in great demand in his own village as well as nearby villages. One stormy night,he was called upon for a very difficult case to nearby village. He tried his best but couldn’t save the patient. The furious relatives started chasing to beat him up.

The old doctor ran and ran amidst heavy rain and thunder and he reached the river separating his native village from this one.The river had already risen and flashes of lightening showed the inclement waves ready to engulf everything. The old man looked back and saw the angry mob still charging towards him.Scared, without any second thought,he jumped into the river.Having no knowledge of swimming,he almost drowned but somehow was able to reach the other bank. No one from the mob dared to jump into the flooded river,so the doctor was safe.

It was midnight when he reached his home.As he entered,he saw his son reading a book on medicine. The apothecary sighed and spoke “Son,you won’t succeed in medical profession by reading the medical books alone, the art of swimming is essential as well”
