August 15,2014,68th Independence Day, India. It fills me with pride that on this day the country was successful in breaking the shackles of subjugation, oppression, injustice against the common man. However, looking back, I feel it was the first and last time probably this impossible goal was achieved. Impossible because, in the last 68 years, these things that denizens had opposed against have taken a more legal form and the fetters are tighter than before.
Fighting against a foreign rule had united the country. People fought to save each other’s home. Now, those inside the country are fighting for power and money, who will oppose them? The disparity created on the basis of religion, caste and class has been nurtured by these evil forces and sadly the people themselves support these ideas. They would rather see their neighbor go down even if it means supporting another who doesn’t care a whit about them.
The legal form of oppression is now officially named as ‘Politics’. Personally, I don’t care if a leader is having a college degree or not as long as he/she has the ideas to improve the living of the public. Sadly, if we remove this minimum requirement to contest for an election, there are no criteria for ethical standards and that’s where the development caves in. Rather than working for the society, it’s an individual race to get more power, teaming with others to bring down some others. Favoring those people who have tons of money, businessman or industrialists or any such groups and support their standards of working which often creates anguish to common men. That’s where the subjugation comes in, nepotism, bribery are among the side products of such system.
68 years have passed and we are still a struggling economy marked by communal clashes and poverty displayed as our symbol to the world! We struggled to save our land, our wealth, our fraternity, and where did they go? I still feel under the rule of dictators under various social names, I ask myself what was the independence for! In recent times, there was a small group that started an educated move and engulfed the country with an urge to revolt against the dwindling ethics but it didn’t take long when this group disappointed the entire nation in relapsing and joining the same against whom the country was ready to fight.
Fortunately, it did some good changes in unopposed (hidden) monarchy of leadership and the country has started to make some progress. With this note, I would like to believe that may this change be permanent and the nation continues on the path of never ending progress and success.
